What is Gender, Projected?
What is Gender, Projected?
Gender, Projected is an ongoing photo project exploring gender expression and identity, started by Am Norgren and Reese Ramponi, who wanted a way to ask questions of themselves and others about gender. By showing photographs and sharing interviews of participants, who identify as everything from male to genderfluid to transgender, we aim to spur discussion around gender and identity, even when that discussion brings up challenging issues.
We hope to generate discussion about questions like the following:
How can we highlight a subject's gender without reducing them to that?
How can we focus on gender without erasing how race, class, nationality, and other identity markers intersect with their gender expression?
Are we pushing boundaries, expanding comfort zones, and increasing understanding or playing dress up, trivializing the gender-nonconforming experience, and perpetuating stereotypes?
How can you get involved?
You can get involved in Gender, Projected by donating, spreading the word, being a model, and following us on Facebook, Tumblr, and Twitter. Whether you haven't thought much about gender or you’ve been looking for a space to explore it, we’d love for you to join the project and the conversation!
